Moving on to a Second Pair September 10, 2010 Joseph R Furterer I've owned J-Buds for over a year now. I used them with an older smaller MP3 player for a while, mostly for sleeping. As has been indicated in some other reviews, they are very comfortable but have a tendency to fall out during the night (this isn't too big a deal for me at least, it often isn't every night, and sometimes I don't even wake up until my alarm goes off anyway).
Between sleeping with the J-Buds and throwing them in my pocket before a class or when I meet up with friends, I put a lot of ware and tear on the cord. The first pair I owned lasted nearly a year, close to when the warranty was up. I noticed, going to sleep one night, that I was having trouble with one of the buds losing sound. By the next night, I was having a lot of trouble getting both of the buds to play sound at the same time consistently. By the 3rd night, they were done. If I could get sound at all, it was only through 1 bud.
I contacted customer support and notified them of the issue. I got a very prompt reply, a new pair was sent out to me per the warranty within a few days, and I was a happy camper.
Shortly after I picked up an iPod touch and used my apple headphones. They died very quickly (within 3 months of owning the product) under the exact same wear and tear I put my J-Buds through. I switched back to my J-Buds, and now, about 5-6 months later, I lost sound in one of the earphones.
I debated quickly whether I thought these headphones would be worth buying again, especially knowing that two pairs had died on me. Ultimately, I think the headphones dying is mostly due to how I use them. I tend to ball up the cord to get it to fit into my pocket which puts stress on the wire and - if the headphones are still plugged in - it can put a lot of stress on the joint where the headphones plug in (which is where the problem with my 2nd J-Buds arose). In comparing with the apple headphones that came with my iPod, I'm actually pretty impressed with the J-Buds. In addition to both pairs lasting longer than the apple headphones to begin with, they came with a one year warranty which was very easy to make a claim on and extended the life of the headphones to nearly two years. For $10, knowing that I'll have headphones for at least a year regardless of the stress I put on them is a bargain!
The J-Buds are not the most amazing sound quality out there, but I wouldn't discredited them too much. I think the sound quality is pretty decent, actually, especially for an in ear headphone. It's definitely sound quality above the price range, so it's a great buy in that regard.
I also find that, as advertised, they really do block out background noise. I'm pretty skeptical of headphones that claim to do this, but it's nice to know I can sit with my iPod at half volume and know that I won't even hear other people talking in the room. It makes the music comfortable to listen to while making it easy to block out background noise. For sleeping, this is a huge plus!
Great product with the price September 9, 2010 Bamboo Fly (Warren, NJ USA) I was surprised when I received and started using it. The sound quality is very good, and wearing it is comfortable too.
good product September 9, 2010 nellie very satisfied with this purchase ... the sound is a little brassy but it's good overall
these lasted six months. September 9, 2010 p george (portland, or) these are great! until they break! mine only lasted six months! welcome to sucktown!
Wires cracked after 3 uses September 8, 2010 SuperMom (Columbus, OH) I was thrilled with these - they fit great, sounded great (although didn't greatly reduce ambient sound) but after having them for only 3 days - one of the cords had 2 cracks in the black plastic through which I could see the silver wire underneath. They still work, but I had to wrap the cords in electrip tape where the rips were and it makes an unpleasant lump. NOT very high quality material, and it is a temporary fix, I will have to replace them very soon.
UPDATE - The company - when contacted, has however promised to send a replacement within 2 business days, reviving my faith in the product. We'll see how it goes.
